Importance of improving your emotional intelligence: You’ve heard that emotional intelligence is a key component of success. But how can you improve?
Improve emotional intelligence.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is a concept that teaches us how
to effectively manage our own emotions and the emotions of others. Essentially,
it's our ability to identify, understand and express our feelings. Despite its
name, EQ involves cognitive intelligence and is not simply a concept
taught to children. Strong emotional intelligence is vital for living a
happy and healthy life.
Improving emotional intelligence can transform your
relationships. When you adjust to your own feelings, you become more aware of
the emotions of others, which improves your ability to build healthy
relationships. You are able to understand the concerns of others, capture
emotional cues, and interact comfortably with others. When you can take care of
your emotional needs, you are more emotionally available - as a partner,
friend, co-worker, and family member.
It's important to understand the different ways you can
express yourself emotionally. You should be able to tell when someone is trying
to make you feel an emotion; this is called self-expression. It's the best way to
solve problems through emotions since it acknowledges your feelings and
encourages you to find a solution. You should also express positive feelings
such as happiness, gratitude, and affection. Failure to do so can lead to
unacknowledged feelings such as anger or resentment. Essentially, it can make
you sick when you don't understand and express your emotions properly.
While some people develop their emotional skills naturally,
some evidence suggests that it is a skill that can be developed and improved.
For example, a 2019 randomized controlled trial found that emotional
intelligence training improved emotional skills in the workplace.
The results of this study are encouraging and provide a
novel and innovative evidence-based intervention to develop emotional
intelligence skills. This can be used for student success and student
leadership in a collegiate setting, for leadership development in an
organizational setting, and by individuals for personal development to overcome
the challenges of their maladaptive characteristics. Unlike most interventions,
which either span a long time, such as therapeutic interventions, or a short
time, such as seminars and lectures, the Dharma Living Program provides a
controlled time frame that can effectively improve the individual emotional
intelligence. Before their investigation, ESCI scores were often addressed in
studies using coaching as a change mechanism. However, the results of this
study suggest that there may be other effective ways to improve these skills.
This study supports future research initiatives aimed at improving emotional
and social skills through alternative approaches.
